Electric Mining Service Vehicle For the Open Pit Mining Industry: The test Phase starts in Summer of 2022

Mining operations contribute to 2-3% of our total carbon emissions worldwide. We must find ways to make them more sustainable and reduce their environmental impact.

The electric mining service vehicle (EVM) is a new kind of vehicle designed for the open-pit mining industry. It uses electric propulsion to move around the mine site, and its battery can be recharged using renewable energy sources.

The EMV project is a collaboration between the Innovative Vehicle Institute (IVI), Propulsion Québec, and several partners, including Adria Power Systems, Dana TM4, L. Fournier et Fils Nouveau Monde Graphite, CanmetMINING, Natural Resources Canada, and National Research Council Canada (NRCC).

The project team is now starting a nine-month test phase of the EMV. The tests will take place at an open-pit mine in Quebec, Canada.

The EMV can potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the mining industry by up to 95%. It could also help improve safety and working conditions for miners and reduce noise pollution.

The team is confident that the EMV will be a success and that it will lead to other electric vehicles being developed for the mining industry. This would be a major step forward in making mining operations more sustainable.

The goal of the trial is to fully test the new battery technology through a series of weather conditions in Mining. The donation for the project comes from a $2 million grant from natural resources Canada with the hopes that mining operations could see a greater electrification effort.

We are excited to see the test phase results and hope that the EMV will pave the way for a more sustainable mining industry. With a lofty goal to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, we must start finding ways to reduce the impact of mining operations on the environment.
