One Billion Rising
Human Rights – Eve Ensler, creator of the Vagina Monologues, has launched a new initiative entitled “One Billion Rising.” Ensler’s goal is to have one billion women and men come together to demonstrate the need to end the global violence against women.
The year-long crusade grew from Ensler’s V-Day campaign which has raised over $85 million for national and international organizations and programs that work to stop violence against women and girls. According to the website, there are “7 billion people on the planet. Half of them are women. One third of them are raped or beaten.”
“The level of violence in America is out of control. We have the window ajar, but we haven’t gotten our body through. This action is a real attempt to go the distance now,” Ensler told the Huffington Post.
According to Ensler, “One Billion Rising” will tackle global issues like violence in post-earthquake Haiti, rape in South Africa and Jamaica, sexual trafficking, and rape in the military. Grassroots efforts have already begun online via Facebook and Twitter.
On February 14, 2013 one billion people will “dance, strike and rise” across the globe to demand an end to the violence inflicted upon women around the world. Join them by signing up at One Billion Rising.
