Social Issues – U.S. Republican Presidential front-runner and former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich, recently had everyone applauding when he said he supported a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.
However, even after he made the distinction of the two separate states, he went on to explain that the Palestinians are an “invented people” – it was a nice vacation from reality thinking Gingrich could make it through a statement without offending someone. In this case, that “someone” just so happened to be one side of the Middle East peace process.
He even reaffirmed his statement live on The Jewish Channel of all places, making remarks about how the Palestinians were an invention whose purpose was to destroy Israel – and I roll my eyes.
He stated, “I think that we’ve had an invented Palestinian people who are in fact Arabs and who were historically part of the Arab community. And they had a chance to go many places, and for a variety of political reasons we have sustained this war against Israel now since the 1940s, and it’s tragic.” [sic on the whole damn quote...I wish he would learn how to speak.]
What’s funny though is that Gingrich, among other Republican presidential candidates, is in hot pursuit of the Jewish vote – so one would assume that he would not “go there” in terms of delegitimizing the Palestinian people.
As if old Newt wasn’t removed from the world enough, he called the Obama administration’s approach to Middle East diplomacy “so out of touch with reality that it would be like taking your child to the zoo and explaining that a lion was a bunny rabbit.”
