Opinion – It should be no surprise that the everything-hating Westboro Baptist Church will be protesting the funeral of recently deceased Penn-State football coach Joe Paterno. Really, it should be no surprise at all.
A daughter of the controversial church’s pastor Fred Phelps tweeted their plans shortly after the announcement of Paterno’s death on Sunday. The church, which hates everything but most of all hates “fags”, has put its name in the news time and time again with its much hated funeral protests. Though the group numbers only a few dozen, they have made successful use of the internet and social media to incite response to their hateful social values.
Paterno is a ripe candidate for the pleasure of their company, considering his involvement in the recent child rape scandal at the esteemed university. While his action (or inaction) in the ordeal is certainly morally and socially questionable, the legendary coach’s memory is one that sits very dear to both football fans and, more importantly, his family.
Of course, when the good pastor dies, it will be interesting to see who is in attendance outside of his funeral. (It could be soon. He’s 82.) My suggestion? Tailgate party. Hot dogs, sausages, and the gayest beer that can be bought.
