Listing the Hate
LGBT Issues – The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) released a list of 11 new hate groups aimed at the gay or LGBT community, which is a staggering rise of 59 percent last year.
SPLC indicated that the total number of groups that achieved “hate-group” status reached 1,018, which is slightly up from the year before, however, “the number of anti-gay groups jumped from 17 to 27.” A number which includes the venerable SPLC dropping groups from their active list.
Last year was a good year for the gay community and their allies, with the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and the legalization of same-sex marriage in New York State. However, all this equality seems to be irritating right wing, anti-gay groups. In fact the SPLC stated these monumental steps towards equality, and the “growing acceptance of same-sex marriage by Americans,” might be stoking the fire.
At least seven of the new groups have a religious association, such as the infamous Westboro Baptist Church.
