Civil Rights March
LGBT Issues – Joseph Knudson, American gay rights advocate, is calling for everyone to join the “Let’s Reach One Million” campaign in a worldwide civil rights march on April 21st, 2012. The march is an effort to raise awareness globally of the rights of the LGBT community to “live within the same laws and guarantees allowed all other segments of society.”
Being labeled as a ‘call to arms’ the campaign calls on LGBT Equality organizations, as well as Civil Rights and Human Rights organizations from across the nation to rally together and plan their own demonstrations.
In a statement for the event Knudson said “With election year in America upon us, as well as current work taking place for the ultimate passage of omnibus LGBT equality legislation in America, the window of opportunity is upon us and has never been as open as it is now.”
The event’s main site “Let’s Reach One Million People” states that while civil and equal rights are the core mission, it is also about enlightening societies and worldwide governments about the plight of LGBT people. Ultimately the goal is also to do exactly what the title says, reach one million participants.
Demonstrations are already planned in Pakistan and the Philippines, as well as in major American cities like Atlanta, Chicago, New York, Oklahoma City, Portland, and Washington D.C..
Chrisie Edkins, a transgender woman, has created an accompanying YouTube video discussing the importance of the event, watch below.
