You’re Fired!
LGBT Issues – Al Fischer, a popular music teacher at St. Ann Catholic School in St. Louis County, has allegedly been fired after an official overheard him talking about his upcoming wedding to his male partner of 20 years.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the school had informed Fischer that he would be terminated on March 9th, the day of his wedding, however, after his partner, Charlie Robin, “posted news of the firing on Facebook, Fischer was terminated the very next day.”
The St. Louis Archdiocese is backing the decision to fire Fischer, claiming that according to the “Christian Witness Statement,” that all Catholic educators sign, employees agree “not to take a public position contrary to the Catholic Church” and that they must “demonstrate a public life consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church.”
DignityUSA released a statement saying:
“A chasm exists between the support extended to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender church employees by many of their colleagues and parishioners and the letter-of-the-law behaviors of Church officials. We invite and pray for a change of heart at the levels of top leadership of the Church we love. They have much to learn from the Christian witness of those serving in the trenches.”
We will continue to update you on the situation as more developments in the story occur.
