Human Rights – MTV is asking its audience to take on a new challenge, and it doesn’t involve sitting through another episode of Jersey Shore. The “Against Our Will” campaign is asking college students to submit a creative idea to “raise awareness of and encourage action on modern day slavery in the U.S.”
While we think of human slavery as something from the past, it is estimated that 600,000 to 820,000 men, women, and children are trafficked across international borders each year according to United States Department of State data.
MTvU launched the “Against Our Will” campaign in September 2011 to raise awareness about modern-day slavery. According to the campaign this form of slavery has been reported in all 50 states within the past two years. Sex-trafficking and labor slavery in restaurants, hotels, and resorts are two common forms slavery.
“College students often wake up the world to atrocities,” Stephen Friedman, President of MTV, said during a panel discussion at the Clinton Global Initiative. “What we will do in the campaign is follow these inspirational young people who are leading the charge. MTvU is giving them a microphone.”
The “Against Our Will” challenge calls on currently enrolled college students to dream up of a digital tool like a game, social media widget, and so on that will raise awareness of modern day slavery and provide ways for people do something about it. The tool should be something that will promote activism and advocacy.
In partnership with LexisNexis, a global provider of content and technology solutions for organizations and businesses, the winners will take home $10,000 and the chance to work with MTvU to make your idea come to life.
