Environment – Throwing away garbage has become something good for the environment in Durban, South Africa. Landfills, normally filled with unwanted waste, toxins, and methane gas, are now being used in a new and innovative way, which, for a change, is something positive in regards to garbage.

The “Gas to Electricity” project, “extracts landfill gas from dumpsites–which is 40 to 60 percent methane–and converts it into electricity.”

This project is not only powering homes in the area and creating jobs, it also makes the landfills less–well–offensive to the nose.

So far, the “landfill produces enough electricity to power almost 4000 homes.” Not bad for trash that no one wanted… though we would like to point out… you should still recycle.
