WTF? Obama Gang-Bangs Constitution With NDAA
Civil Rights – President Barack Obama kicked off the new year with the signing of one of the single most disturbing bills ever to reach the Oval Office: The National Defense Authorization Act. The constitutional abomination came into effect on Saturday evening (while most Americans were busy celebrating the end of 2011) and gives the President the absolute power to detain American citizens indefinitely; no trial, no jury, straight to Guantanamo you go!
Disguised as a defense bill to help the government fight the War On Terror, the NDAA is perhaps the most serious attack on the Constitution, democracy, and civil liberties that America has ever witnessed.
“President Obama’s action today is a blight on his legacy because he will forever be known as the president who signed indefinite detention without charge or trial into law” said Anthony Romero, the executive director of the ACLU.
Romero further noted that “The statute is particularly dangerous because it has no temporal or geographic limitations, and can be used by this and future presidents to militarily detain people captured far from any battlefield.”
According to reports, the White House has been incredibly sensitive about the law and the potential reaction of the public – hence its impeccable timing.
In effort to cushion the potential fallout from the signing, President Obama issued a statement saying “I want to clarify that my administration will not authorize the indefinite military detention without trial of American citizens,” [...] “Indeed, I believe that doing so would break with our most important traditions and values as a Nation. My administration will interpret section 1021 [of the bill] in a manner that ensures that any detention it authorizes complies with the Constitution, the laws of war, and all other applicable law.”
While we applaud the President’s sentiment, the reality of the bill is one that should leave American citizens horrified. Not only is it a direct attack on the rights and freedoms of democracy, it also puts another foot in the door for the potential of a much bleaker scenario, and for that, we should all be concerned.
