Celebrity Charities – After six years of negotiations and setbacks, Madonna’s mission to provide schools and education to children in Malawi will literally break ground on March 30th and is projected to be completed in June 2013.
Things have changed since the Raising Malawi charity began: the design of the schools will be simpler, the charity will be able to reach double the original number of students, and Raising Malawi is now also working with an agency called buildOn to co-develop the schools.
“This remains a very big priority in my life and I am excited that with the help of buildOn we can maintain our ongoing commitment to move forward efficiently,” Madonna said in a statement provided to The Associated Press.
Raising Malawi faced several obstacles, such as farmers complaining they were removed from land intended for the schools, construction details, as well as Madonna’s original plan to involve the Kabbalah Center in Los Angeles.
“I have learned a great deal over the last few years and feel so much more confident that we can reach our goals to educate children in Malawi, especially young girls, in a much more efficient and practical way,” said Madonna who has adopted two children from Malawi.
BuildOn and Raising Malawi seem to be a very practical combination. As buildOn has already built many schools in the impoverished nation and over 400 schools across the globe.
