Lenny Kravitz For Clean Water

Celebrity Charities – Since 1990 the UNICEF Tap Project has worked to ensure more than 2 billion people have access to clean water and improved sanitation. Millions of people around the world take tap water for granted, however the fact remains that millions more don’t have this simple luxury. This year Singer Lenny Kravitz has joined the project and is encouraging people to help children and their families get access to clean water and proper sanitation by donating to UNICEF during World Water Week (March 19 – 25) every time they drink a free glass of water.

Children without access to clean, safe drinking water and sanitation face serious health problems. Health issues such as diarrhea can contribute to children missing school or even worse, death. Young girls, who are often responsible for finding fresh water for their families, eventually stop attending school because the daunting task of collecting water can sometimes take hours.

“I was born in New York City and have always taken access to clean water as a given. No child should die of diarrhea from drinking dirty water. That thousands of children under the age of five continue to die every day because they lack clean water and basic sanitation is simply unacceptable,” Kravitz stated.

UNICEF recently announced that 89% of the world has access to clean water and the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) has been met, however, the goal for accessing sanitation falls short of their projected numbers. While 89% may sound high, there are nearly 800 million people in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa without access to clean water, while 2.5 billion, nearly half the developing world, still lack improved sanitation.
