Celebrity Charities – Actress Naomi Watts and Valerie Plame Wilson, author and ex-CIA agent, have teamed up with CutNukes.org, a subsidiary of the Global Zero movement, to bring attention to the fact that the U.S. government will “spend $600 billion on nuclear weapons” while cutting the budget for teachers, jobs, and social services.

The international Global Zero movement launched in December 2008 and “includes more than 300 political, military, business, faith and civic leaders-and hundreds of thousands of citizens-working for the phased, verified elimination of all nuclear weapons worldwide.”

In addition, the “movement combines grassroots and media outreach, cutting-edge policy analysis and direct dialogue with governments to make the elimination of nuclear weapons an urgent global imperative and to bring all nuclear weapons countries to the table to negotiate the phased reduction of arsenals to zero.”

Watts and Plame have recorded a PSA to urge leaders to stop spending on nuclear weapons; in a society that aims to reduce the federal deficit while at the same time increase jobs for citizens, this PSA hits home by highlighting an area the government hasn’t proposed cutting.

Watts became interested in the movement after playing Plame Wilson in the 2010 film, Fair Game. “Plame Wilson was an undercover CIA operative working to ensure that Iran and Iraq did not acquire nuclear weapons. The government blew her cover as payback for an op-ed article her husband wrote criticizing the White House.”

“Global Zero members believe that the only way to eliminate the nuclear threat – including proliferation and nuclear terrorism – is to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, secure all nuclear materials and eliminate all nuclear weapons.”
