Ambulance Assault

Social Issues – Hamden, Connecticut – After falling at a holiday party, a 22-year-old woman suffered a concussion and was taken by ambulance to Yale-New Haven Hospital for treatment. While en-route, the paramedic entrusted to save her life, allegedly raped her while she was strapped into the stretcher in the back of the ambulance.

The medic, 49-year-old Mark Powell of North Haven, surrendered to the charges of unlawful restraint and first degree sexual assault; however, he was released on a $25,000 bond.

Hamden Police Chief Thomas Wydra commented, saying the allegations represent “outrageous and horrifying conduct.”

“Our society places the greatest level of trust and confidence in its public safety providers, and the circumstances in this case reflect a tremendous breach of that faith. The victim in this incident demonstrated enormous strength and courage in bringing this complaint forward,” he added.

“This kind of behavior is an affront to AMR caregivers across Connecticut who provide high quality care to their patients each and every day, with integrity and compassion,” American Medical Response General Manager Charles Babson said.
